Customize

Translate

The translate page allows you to modify the different language translations included with SysAid. This has two practical purposes:

  • Take an existing translation, such as English, and customize it to your needs. This includes the ability to edit any text found anywhere in SysAid.
  • Translate SysAid into a language for which a translation does not yet exist.

SysAid translation files

Translations in SysAid are modified by editing the appropriate translation file. A translation file is a text file that contains every single line of text that exists in SysAid for a specific language. SysAid contains one translation file for every single language that appears in the Language dropdown list.

The translation file is layed out in sections: there are general sections that contain text used throughout SysAid, and there are specific sections that contain text for a particular page or function in SysAid. Each section of the translation file has keys and the keys' translations, separated by an "=" sign.

Below is a screenshot of the English and Spanish translation files open side by side. The translation file is open to the Catalog section, which includes translation keys related to catalog items.

Editing a translation file

To edit a translation file:

  1. Select the language you would like to edit from the Language dropdown list. Notice how the Download translate file link changes to reflect the language you've chosen.
  2. Download the translation file to your computer. Make sure to remember where you save it.
  3. Open the translation file in a text editor, such as Notepad.
  4. Find the translation keys you would like to edit. If you are editing a specific key, the best way to find it is by searching for the text you would like to change. If you are translating all of SysAid into another language, you can start at the top and work your way down.
  5. Once you've found the key you would like to edit, enter your new translation in place of the text that appears on the right side of the "=" sign. Do not, under any circumstances, change the text that appears to the left of the "=".

     Updating a key in the translation file

  6. Continue making changes as necessary, until you've finished updating the translation file. Then save your changes.
  7. Return to the Translate page in SysAid, and click the Choose File button to select the edited translation file.
  8. Once you've selected the file, click the Upload button to upload the edited translation file. All changes you've made immediately take effect.

Important: In order to use the translation file you've uploaded, you must be viewing SysAid in that language. For example, if you've edited the translation file for Portuguese (Brazil), you must be viewing SysAid in Portuguese (Brazil) in order to see changes. If you are viewing SysAid in Portuguese (Portugal) instead, you won't see any of the changes you've made. You may choose your language under Preferences --> My Settings, and you may change the default language for all new users under Preferences --> Account Defaults.

Translation files in the SysAid Community

The SysAid Community includes a repository of user generated translations created by SysAid administrators the world over. If SysAid does not currently exist in your language, be sure to check the community-- it may be that somebody has already posted a translation of SysAid into your language of choice.

To download a translation file from the SysAid Community:

  1. From the Language dropdown list, select the language for which you would like a translation.
  2. Click the link Download a translation file from the SysAid Community. This opens the SysAid Community to the language page you've selected.
  3. Look for topics with attachments. These topics most likely contain translated copies of the translation file.

  4. Open the topic, and find the post that has the translation file attached.

     Download Czech translation file

  5. Save the translation file to your computer, and then upload it to SysAid using the instructions above for Editing a translation file.

There may be cases where a translation file for the language you want does not yet exist in the community. In these cases, you can translate SysAid yourself. Once you've done this, be sure to upload your translation file to the SysAid community so that other SysAiders can benefit from your hard work!

To upload a translation file to the SysAid Community:

  1. Before you start, make sure you've integrated with the SysAid Community from Preferences --> My Settings --> My Community Settings (tab). Then return to the Translate page.
  2. From the Language dropdown list, select the language which you've translated.
  3. Click the Upload to SysAid Community button. This opens a page where you can enter a subject and body for your post.
  4. Enter a subject and body for your community post. Make sure you mention that you've included a translation in your post. If it's only a partial translation, be sure to note that as well.
  5. Click Upload. Your post and translation file has now been added to the SysAid Community. Other SysAiders will be thankful to you for your hard work!

I cannot find the sr.cust fields on the sysaid.text translation file to edit the text. Where are they?

Hi BobM,

The best way to find keys in the translation file is to search for the exact text that appears in your SysAid user interface. For example, if you are trying to find SR Custom Int 1, a search for the exact text "SR Custom Int 1" will pull up the exact location in the translation file. For your reference, here are the keys for SR custom fields with their default English translations:

sr.cust_date1=SR Custom Date 1
sr.cust_date2=SR Custom Date 2
sr.cust_int1=SR Custom Int 1
sr.cust_int2=SR Custom Int 2
sr.cust_list1=SR Custom List 1
sr.cust_list2=SR Custom List 2
sr.cust_notes=SR Custom Notes
sr.cust_text1=SR Custom Text 1
sr.cust_text2=SR Custom Text 2

Ok, who's pulling a fast one there? (see attached files)

Yesterday, I downloaded the sysaid properties file (1.sysaid_text_en_US.utf8.properties) and searched for both sr.cust_list1 and SR Custom List 1 and it was not there. I did make a change to the Admin Welcome screen and uploaded the file just to make a change, which worked. I downloaded the file again and still could not find the sr.cust fields!

Today, I download the properties file again, (2.sysaid_text_en_US.utf8.properties) and this time the sr.cust section was there and I was able to make the change. Also, my original change to the Admin Welcome screen was still there.

Sooo, who are what caused this? I spent hours yesterday trying to figure out what I did wrong, only to find what I was looking for was not in the downloaded file and today it is! Why?

I believe what your looking for is found under "Customize/Translate" then "Download Translate File" on the right.

Thanks for the response, unfortunately we corrupted that file
That's the reason we want the default file to upload it again

Hi Elopez,

Any language in SysAid that does not come pre-translated contains the standard English translation. Simply put, select the language English (United Kingdom) or English (Australia) translation file and you can download the original English translation file.

Hello,

I am trying to translate SysAid version 8.5.08 and while checking my translation I noticed that the headers/group names on the reporting page such as Help Desk, Work Load, Inventory, Highest Values Reports etc. are not translated and they are not in the translation file. I also checked html files and could not find it there as well. How can this be translated?

I attached the screen shot of the page I am trying to translate and marked with red the headers that I need to translate.

Thank you in advance for prompt response.

Kind regards,

Arijana

Hello Arijana,

To translate the headers, go to Manager Portal -- > Design Reports page.
Click on any folder and then on the ‘Modify Folder’ icon to change the name of the folder.

I hope this information will help you!

Any way to add comments i.e. notate what I changed so I can go back several versions later and see what I changed and revert if needed?
