Hi
In the latest version (7.5.4) Feature Request 5748 says you can now link to a network file.
Has anyone tested this and how did you do it?
I am encountering problems - it now allows me to put in the path to the file (which it didn't used to) and attach it to the SR, the problem is when you click on the link from within the SR it tries to open it in a browser, giving me the message 'Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (c) isn't associated with any program'.
Can anyone help?

Dear kimmey,

I have recreated this on my environment and indeed the same is happening here also. I am forwarding this to our Research and Development team and we will notify you on their findings.

We will be glad to further assist you any time.

Thanks Inna

Hello
I see no progress has been made on this problem....I have just installed V8 and it doesn't appear to have been fixed in that.

Any ideas when it will be included?
Thanks

I would actually like to continue troubleshooting this here. This way, we can get more SysAiders to test and report back their findings and thoughts.

Generally, it is now accepting anything you'd enter into the link field. It will, however, add them as a relative link to the SysAid http URL (if I enter abc.txt - it will add http://sysaidURL:8080/abc.txt - which will obviously not work).
If you want to link to a network file, you'll need to use the file:// URI scheme. The syntax is file://server-name/share-name/directories/file.ext

You can learn more about the file:// URI scheme on Wikipedia

Let me know if that works for you...
Joseph.

Hi Joseph
Have tested using the syntax you provided. It does actually work ok in I.E but still will not work in Firefox..... it doesn't even attempt to open the file.

The same file path that works in IE, submitted in Firefox gets converted to file://///servername/share/directory/file.ext, which is in keeping with the explanation on Wikipedia for Mozilla browser.......and if we right click, copy link location, then paste into address bar, the file opens!!!!

Any ideas?

Kimmey

Hi kimmey,

I'm sorry for the delayed response... We've been having some holidays here in that past few weeks, so I didn't have much time to visit the forums...
I just tested it here on FF7 and IE9 and that syntax (five slashes) worked on both.

I tend to believe that this is either a browser configuration, as cooperspc suggested, or a problem in earlier FF versions. Try upgrading FF and if that won't work, check the configuration (I found this link, but I think it is really old and may not be relevant to newer FF versions).

Joseph.

Hi Joseph
Thanks.
Following cooperspc suggestion I did investigate firefox configuration and found that this worked for me;-

Install NoScript addon for FireFox

-Tools - Addons - NoScript - Advanced tab - Trusted tab -Check box:: Allow local links

- In same window - whitelist tab - paste in http://yourwebsite.com to address of website - click allow .
I didn't activate the scripts globaly allowed as suggested instead I just whitelisted all my genuine sites.

Then if file opened in format file://///server/share/directory/file.ext it works
