Each organization I worked for had a slightly different standard:
Firstname.lastname
Firstname.L (L= First letter of Lastname)
Lastname.F (F= First letter of Firstname)
Firstname - small organizations that didn't think they would grow enough to hire employees with names that they already have......
F.Lastname
L.Firstname
Firstname-lastname
And more....
I think you get the idea.....
So what is the standard ?
I recommend Firstname.Lastname for both emails and AD accounts.
I heard some that say that giving the full name in the email isn't that recommended because they don't want to disclose the full details in the email address...

We use whatever the clients want. However i personally prefer firstname.lastname. Just keeps it uniform and organised...

we go with F.Lastname for both e-mail and AD username. If we run into a conflict then we use Firstname.Lastname.
I'm thinking about issuing people both F.Lastname and Firstname.Lastname email addresses as standard but we'll have to see how the bosses respond to the idea lol

We use FLastname for both AD and email in order to keep the names unique for the most part and also to keep the user names relatively short.

we've got people with double barrelled names and use the same process but I'm guessing you mean they're got three distinct words in their name

We go with Firstname.Lastname. We do not at the moment but were we to have someone with a double barrell name it would take the format Firstname.Initial-2ndSurname if you get my meaning.
I think the person with three names should stop being so selfish and share them around a little bit! Save you the effort Obelix!
Although there isn't an "Approved" format, for most businesses the above system would be the preferred, however for large companies such as Microsoft, it wouldn't be practical, so they have to involve numbering of employees. Whereas for a small insurance company in Scotland, numbering your employeed would be rediculous because it is almost certain that at least 90% of staff would be numbered one. I think this, although there is one that is preferred, is the reason there is no convention, which makes perfect sense really.

Whoops, also, our usernames are fistnameL. We see the Windows login as something completely separate.
