My favourites have got to be:

1. My MacBook - yes it's a Mac. Well done for spotting that one I use this not only for home use / entertainment but also working on our networks. It's a fantastic bit of hardware with a pretty good OS on top. Plus as I'm implementing Linux servers at work in certain roles, it gives me scope to practice my Command Line Warrior Skilz!

2. Dropbox - not really a gadget but a great bit of software!

3. Evernote - again it's software but having the ability to type notes, copy sections of web pages, tutorials, notes, documents etc into one place that is replicated and available via the web is fantastic. Between this and Dropbox, I've pretty much relegated my USB keys to the bin.

4. Leatherman TTi - probably the best and most useful multi-tool ever invented. I use this at work, on trips, on expeditions and pretty much everywhere! This was the main bit of kit used to keep my tuk-tuk going through 4000km of driving in India. Well that, duct tape, tie wraps and a dollop of ingenuity.
we monitor the standard Exchange services as well as a few web servers, databases and a smattering of process across all servers. To do this we use Nagios and have hooked just about everything with a data port into it. At present we're running just shy of 1000 checks across the company with e-mail and sms alerting as well as historical graphing for looking at trends.
Just out of interest, who still uses their own FTP servers? If you do, what are you using and why?

I'm curious as to what people use in the real world. At present we're using a w2k3 solution but I'm looking to migrate that to a *nix one for greater security etc
That's just awesome!

Can I use it to send to "special" users at my work place?
A big stick.
does she need a job over here? if so, i've got just the position for her
Greetings, all!

I know there's probably a really quick way of doing this but I'm stumped if I can find it so far! lol

The standard user details contain E-mail, Text Message, Phone and Cellular Phone. I've like to change this to E-mail, Direct Phone, Office Phone, Mobile but can't see how to rename these fields if it's possible at all.

I've found how to add an ldap query in and assign it a new file but none of the titles fit exactly with what we're after so any advice would be great.

Cheers all.
hhhmmm, I was looking for a 24hrs+ option but seems you guys don't count on the fact IT Support must have more hours in the day then mere mortals lol

many thanks!

This should prove interesting as according to it we've got 688 users in there

Once I've sorted the source OU's and v6 disables the accounts (very nice touch by the way!) would the best course be to delete the disabled users or just leave them? Personally, I like to have a clean database and list but if it's potentially problematic then I'll leave it as is.
Greetings one and all!

We've been going through our AD implementation and migrating retired users etc into their own OU to comply with new HR guidelines etc and I'm curious if there's a way to exclude this OU from helpdesk. Also, would there be an easy way of removing these accounts from sysaid if they're already in there?

Many thanks

I fire a mass e-mail warning user that powerpoint is now the fav target. You know what's the first and most asked question ?

"How do they put the malware in powerpoint ?"

My reply would be "it's very complicated but we are seeing active use of this in the wild and as such you need to be aware of it"

There's a difference between making people aware that things are dangerous and showing them how to do "black hat" stuff.

If you want some good reading on security which isn't dry at all, try Security Monkey's blog over at ITToolBox.com. http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/security/investigator/ Have a read of his case files as they set real security into a realistic scenario ... plus they fun to read.

(I'm still missing some pictures from others btw...)
just missing the mug / t-shirt combo over here to rectify that one for you, Saar

Does that count as a subtle hint? I'm not sure .....
Afternoon, all

Just a quick one really but is it possible to change the icons used on the end user portal?

The marketing group have asked that we put our logo on the top (which we're doing now) and change the icons from green to the company's blue. Am I right in presuming that it can be done through just changing the icons?

Many thanks.
we've had a few blips mostly on laptops but all have been other "bugs" so no sign of the world ending just yet
I agree that as a home based OS then Vista isn't all that bad but as a business one it's a mistake in my opinion.

I was recently pointed at TinyVista and it's sibling TinyXP as an interesting exercise in what can be done with the OS's. Ok, before anyone says anything - yes, they technically violate the licensing agreements and I wouldn't have one on my work network for lover nor money! However, I believe they only violate said agreement on the basis of the licence key - which I promptly removed and used our own ones so I reckon it's all good. The good point is that a full XP install is about 2Gb and the full Vista install is only 3Gb!! How they've cut it all down I don't know but would love to find out. The XP VM machine I'm running is more than happy with 256Mb of RAM and the Vista one is running only 500Mb off the top of my head. Both fully functional and happy as can be.

TinyVista has been the only Vista install I've even vaguely liked enough to use for personal use rather than being forced into it.

Windows 7 ..... now there's something that's going to proving interesting. From the beta I've tried it seems much better than the existing Vista releases and I'm hoping it'll only improve as the refinements progress. I'm also very interested to see what spec it will run on as I think MS might have learnt its lesson with the huge Vista footprint .... ok, I hope so at least.

The more I look at different operating systesm, the more I consider them just applications and you need to pick the right one for the job.
