The First Smartphone is More Than 20 Years Old!

The first smartphone was The IBM Simon Personal Communicator announced at COMDEX on November of 1992. It was a massive device with stylus support for touch input, 1 or 1.8MB memory card support and a nickel-cadmium battery, providing about one hour of talk time. The device allowed users to receive and make telephone calls, send emails and even faxes. Other applications included a calculator, address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, electronic note pad and handwritten annotations.
Although the first smartphone was not widely adopted, nowadays we can`t imagine our life without these useful devices. According to a 2012 survey, the U.S. smartphones users will account around 70% of all U.S. mobile devices by the end of 2013. We use them in every sphere of our daily life. About 92% of consumers use their smartphones to send text messages, whereas 84% use them for browsing the Internet. But with the advent of new technologies our cellphones have become really multi-functional.

For instance, It's already possible to use smartphones as the key to our cars, lockers and front doors. The Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT in Darmstadt has developed software solutions that can turn smartphones into secure and versatile keys. ShareKey provides users with new functions- it can issue digital keys remotely for a specified amount of time and send these keys directly to the recipient’s smartphone as a QR code. To open a door, all you need to do is to wave the phone near the lock. The researchers will be demonstrating their ShareKey software at this year's CeBIT trade fair in Hannover (March 5-9, 2013).

The capabilities of today`s smartphones seem almost boundless so we can have our own handily sized computers with us everywhere we go. Apparently, not everyone is interested in such functionality.

«Dumb phones» are still very much being used, sometimes becoming a symbol of anti-consumerism . There's even an anti-smartphone sold by a Netherlands company. John's Phone is a telephone that only allows making and receiving calls. It doesn’t support text messaging, calculator, alarm clock but does come with an address book function- a pen and paper pad built into the back of the device. The phone was included in the permanent collection of the new Museum of Ideas and Inventions in Barcelona.

Tastes differ. Some people become real geeks being hooked on smartphones. Others being afraid of falling victim to the cellphone prefer dumb phones. But whether smartphones really hook users into dependency, or just have become really handy device remains unclear.

And what group do you belong to? Are you really addicted to your smartphone, or you are a proud owner of a dumbphone?

High-tech Christmas

We can’t imagine our Christmas celebration without modern technologies. But sometimes people don`t want to replace old customs with high-tech innovations.
this year a lot of Brussels' citizens reacted negatively to the installation of the 82 ft abstract-style tree in the Grand Place instead of a traditional pine tree.
The citizens drafted the petition for a real Christmas tree and said that they want "respect for their values and traditions". Online petition against the new tree got more than 25,000 signatures. Due to concerns over vandalism during New Year's celebrations it was announced in that the tree would be taken down on 28 December, instead of early January.

Modern technology has always kept расе with old traditions and customs. But is Christmas becoming too hi-tech, or it is quite natural for modern society?

The Best Jobs in the World?

According to 2012 Jobs Rated report organized by careercast.com the first place takes Software Engineer. Their pay is great, hiring demand for their skills is high, and working conditions have never been better.
But it is all too predictable. Here is an alternative .
Bike rider-photographer for Google Maps

Many of the images for of Google Maps were captured with camera and GPS equipment by car, but there were places inaccessible by vehicles. That’s why Google has hired two lucky young men to ride around France on tricycles snapping up photos of historical sites and other important places. On this three-wheeler with nine cameras, GPS, computer and generator they were getting exercise, visiting beautiful places, trekking around France and earning money.

And do you like your job?
Woman Is the World's First Computer Programmer

Today, on 10th December, we celebrate the 197th birth anniversary of Ada Lovelace, often considered as the world's first computer programmer. Ada became famous not only as a daughter of romantic poet Lord Byron but also as an outstanding 19th century mathematician. Her works on analytical engine are recognized as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine.
Women always played a crucial role in the computer science evolution, but unfortunately, they are considered to be not so good at programming and engineering as men. Even though the fair sex makes up a growing portion of computer and Internet users, there is still a large gender gap in the field of Computer Science
Lets find out the reasons of this “social injustice”:
•	Females attach their interest in computer science to more social and people-oriented arenas, such as medicine, education and the arts.
•	Computers are believed to be more boy's toys, that`s why when girls got into computer science departments they come in with less hands-on experience.
•	Women are also a minority in other math and science fields. According to top research universities, computer science exams are in advanced-placement at the high school level for only 15 % of girls.
•	Women don't fit the tech boy stereotype provided by Silicon Valley. This idea of the male “computer geek” that society has portrayed has been going on for decades.
•	And the main reason- women have too much in common with computers. Because no one but the Creator understands their internal logic:-)
But all is not lost! According to the study women's enrollment in the computer science raised from 7 percent in 1995 to 42 percent in 2000. And it is still increasing. Soon women will take a well-deserved position among the world's top computer programmers. After all, a number of notable female computer pioneers such as Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper, and Anita Borg have proven that women make great computer scientists.
But will women make great contributions to the modern technologies industry? Or successful and famous female computer programmer is just a pipe dream?

Conference. Boring to death?

Conference. Boring to death?

A chief executive officer was to give the keynote address at one important conference. That’s why he asked one of his top employees to write a twenty minute speech for him. After that important event the chef was furious. “Why did you write an hour long speech for me?” he bellowed. “Half the audience got up and left the hall before I finished my speech!”
The confused employer replied, “Sir, I wrote you a 20 minute speech. But I also gave you the two extra copies you requested.” :D

The only thing I’m confused about this story is the attentive and concerned audience. I guess in a real life nobody would notice any difference. Am I right? Do you have an experience of attending any really interesting IT training or event? If not, in which one would you like to participate?
Personally, I think nearly all conferences are dull and boring.

What topics are the most interesting for you?

5 Amazing Facts About Spam

There is no need to explain the meaning of the word spam. For sure every Internet user once became a victim of unsolicited bulk messages, junk mail, or commercial e-mail. But let us present you some interesting facts about spam.

1. Depending on the source, the spam is an acronym for Shoulder of Pork and hAM or SPiced hAM. It is named for canned meat product, first introduced in 1937. The word spam became popular in 1970 due to BBC comedy sketch Monty Python, in which the name of meat product was mentioned 108 times. Later sending an irritating, meaningless block of text was called spamming.

2. According to Message Labs, spam accounts for over 60 % of all e-mails. Google reports, that at least one third of all Gmail servers are filled with spam. It must also be pointed out, that Bill Gates receives 4 000 000 e-mails per year, most of them spam. At the same time Jef Poskanzer, the owner of the domain name acme.com, is receiving over 1 million spam e-mails per day.

3. The Cisco Systems analyzed the volume of spam originating from countries worldwide in 2011. The repot ranked them by a percentage of spam volume. The countries with the highest amount of spam sent are India (13.9%), Russia (9.0%) and Vietnam (7.9%).

4. The Government of Canada approved the world’s toughest anti-spam legislation. The corporations can get fines up to 10 million dollars and individuals up to 1 million dollars for anti-spam law violation.

5. The first person arrested for spam was Anthony Greco, aged 18, on February 2005. He was accused of sending 1.5 million of unsolicited ads for porn and mortgages. He blackmailed MySpacee.com in order to get marketing contract with them. Anthony was invited for a meeting to discuss the contract terms, where he was arrested.

Spam has become an integral part of Internet life. Once your e-mail address gets on a spam list, it's almost impossible to remove it. Nevertheless, INP-Software wishes you to get only useful and pleasant messages not only in the Internet, but in a real life too. Let the spam pass you by!
